Mike Keenan does not seem fazed or worried that hockey's #MeToo moment could turn on him.
Interviewed by Igor Eronko of Sport Express, Keenan described the events of the last few weeks as a "curious development." He stated that he does not personally know Mike Babcock or his coaching methods, but finds it obvious that Babcock must have rubbed people the wrong way.
Asked about his personal record, including his nickname "Iron Mike" gained for a reputation as a tough disciplinarian, Keenan said:"I was a demanding coach, but always maintained respect for my players. If you ask them, they will tell you 'Yes, he was demanding, but we grew personally and professionally under his leadership, and we won.' Players like that arrangement. They remember the tough times they had to go through...but on the other hand, it's necessary for them to succeed."
All my players knew I cared about them. I asked a lot of them, but I cared. This is important."
The 70-year-old Keenan's last coaching job was with the Kunlun Red Star of the KHL, which ended two years ago. In 2018 he announced that he was battling prostate cancer, and in February of 2019 announced that the cancer had been beaten.
