There has been a lot of talk lately regarding the lack of diversity in hockey. Sidney Crosby teamed with CCM Hockey to try to make a difference in local grassroots programs in his home province of Nova Scotia.
Crosby has vowed to donate 87 sets of hockey equipment to participants of programs that include those that are under-represented in hockey communities. Having easier access to the sport is the best way to entice more families from all backgrounds and walks of life to enroll.
“I wanted to be sure they had the best experience learning the game,” said Crosby. “Having the right equipment is the first step to getting started.”
The Hockey Nova Scotia Black Youth Ice Hockey Program, the Hockey Nova Scotia Indigenous Female Hockey Academy and the Hockey Nova Scotia–ISANS New Canadians Hockey Program are the three programs that Crosby will be donating to. He has already gotten started, giving eight players a huge holiday surprise, appearing on a video screen with a special message as the players were presented with their new equipment.
