Forbes has released their annual list of values for NHL teams. The Boston Bruins have joined the New York Rangers, the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Montreal Canadiens and the Chicago Blackhawks as the fifth team to hold a value of at least $1 billion. The Detroit Red Wings are the only remaining Original Six team to not be valued at or above $1 billion and are currently ranked eighth with a value of $800 million.

The Edmonton Oilers' value has increased by $35 million in the last calendar year according to Forbes, increasing their value of up to $575 million. While the Oilers are ranked 14th amongst NHL franchises, their value is still $5 million shy of the value of recent expansion franchise, the Vegas Golden Knights.

Business is going well though in Edmonton. When Darryl Katz bought the Oilers from the Edmonton Investors Group back in the summer of 2008, the price tag was $170 million. The current Forbes valuation of the franchise reveals a $405 million increase during the roughly 11 and a half years since the transaction.

The Forbes list also shows the Coyotes once again, for the third year in a row, being the least valuable NHL franchise, holding a value of just $300 million. Another interesting point is that as much as the Ottawa Senators are in the news regarding their financial situation, the Winnipeg Jets are actually the least valuable team in Canada, being listed with a value of $420 million, while the Sens are listed with a value of $445 million.
