Both captain Alexander Ovechkin and star defensemen John Carlson had monumental nights in the Capitals 4-3 overtime win against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday.
Carlson, who is currently tied for second overall in points, netted two goals to add to his already impressive start to the season. This would set the Capitals franchise record for most points in a month by a defenseman, with the alternate captain potting 7 goals, 16 assists for 23 points in just 14 games.

Carlson, who finished last season with 70 points, has everyone asking; can the defensemen reach 100 points? If his hot streak continues, it seems as if 100 points and a Norris Trophy nomination could be in his future.
Captain Alexander Ovechkin had himself a milestone night as well, finding the back of the net twice, including an overtime game winner to seal the two points and move the Caps into first place overall in the NHL standings.
Moving his team into first wasn't the only ladder The Great Eight would climb in Tuesday's win. His overtime winner and 11th of the season would also mark his 669th goal, which moves him past Luc Robitaille for 12th most goals in NHL history. He is currently sixteen goals shy of passing Teemu Selanne for 11th overall.
The game winner was also Ovi's 23rd career overtime goal, which ranks him first overall in NHL history for overtime goals.
Ovechkin's two goal night would not only solidify the win, but also solidify the fact that Ovi is clearly still in his prime, and ready to deliver yet another record breaking season for his fans in Washington.

One last note, with three assists last night, Nicklas Backstrom is now tied with Peter Forsberg for 7th on the all-time points list for Swedish born NHL players.
