Gavin McKenna hasn't played an NHL game yet, and he's already at the center of a real debate inside Maple Leafs media circles.
Carlo Colaiacovo went on record this week making the case that McKenna belongs in rare company.
"I do. Yes," Colaiacovo said, when pressed on whether he actually believes McKenna projects as a generational player.
He didn't back off the label either.
"I've always told you that I think he's a game-changer. I've seen him play. I think he had game-breaking abilities," Colaiacovo said.
The pushback in the segment leaned on position. Wingers, the argument goes, rarely get labeled generational the way centers like Connor McDavid do.
Colaiacovo didn't fully concede the point, but he did soften the framing.
"Whether he becomes a generational player, it's up for debate. I do believe he's got generational talent," he said.

The conversation eventually turned to Auston Matthews, and the standard got a lot less forgiving fast.
Matthews posted 27 goals and 26 assists for 53 points in an injury shortened 60 game season, numbers that fall well short of his peak.
"Every player is allowed to have a down year or two," Colaiacovo said, "but this is a big year for Matthews."
That's the real crux of the debate. McKenna gets discussed in hypotheticals, while Matthews gets judged against a résumé he already built.
Sidney Crosby posted 29 goals and 45 assists for 74 points at 38 years old this season, still performing at a level that keeps the generational label attached decades into his career.
Alex Ovechkin added 32 goals and 32 assists for 64 points at 40, the kind of longevity that makes the generational conversation feel earned rather than debated.
That's the bar Colaiacovo is measuring McKenna and Matthews against, not just talent, but staying power at the very top of the league.
"He has to re-establish himself and there are no excuses," Colaiacovo said of Matthews heading into this season.
Toronto is betting heavily on both storylines resolving in its favor this year, a rookie living up to generational hype and a captain answering questions about his own.
Neither outcome is guaranteed, and that tension is exactly why this debate isn't going away before puck drop in October.
