The announcement dropped Sunday morning through TSN and Hockey Canada, and the picture said it all. The kid in the middle. Two former NHL captains flanking him.
Think about that for a second. Tavares is 35. O'Reilly is 35. Celebrini is 19, with two full NHL season on his resume.
And Hockey Canada looked at the room and decided the teenager wears the C.
The math behind it isn't subtle. Celebrini just put up 45 goals and 70 assists in 82 games for the Sharks, finishing at 115 points and a plus-8 rating on a team that went 39-35-8.
That's a jump from rookie of the year contender to franchise centerpiece in one year. On a club ranked 22nd overall in the NHL, he carried the engine.
Tavares had a strong year too. 31 goals, 40 assists, 71 points, and 12 power play markers in Toronto. O'Reilly chipped in 74 points and 8 game-winners in Nashville.
Both veterans have captained NHL teams. Both have won at the international level. Both will be in their mid-30s when the puck drops in Switzerland.
Hockey Canada didn't pick the resume. They picked the trajectory.
There's a generational handoff happening in real time here, and it's rare to see it staged this cleanly. Usually a kid earns the C after years of locker room equity. Celebrini is getting it on potential and play.
The Tavares angle is the one that stings a little. He's been a captain his whole career, and now he's wearing the A behind a teenager. He took it. That matters.
Whether this is a one-tournament arrangement or a signal about who leads Canada into Milan in 2026, nobody is saying yet.
But the message Hockey Canada sent today is loud. The next era already started. The young stud replaces Connor McDavid, who was the captain for Team Canada when Sidney Crosby was injured at the Olympics.
