Former Montreal Canadiens fan favourite hangs up the skates
With HC Fribourg-Gotteron being eliminated in the pre-playoff round in Switzerland's National League, former Montreal Canadien centerman David Desharnais' career has come to a close.

When asked about his feelings following the final game of his career, Desharnais said, "It's crying at the moment, but I don't regret anything in my career, but I wish it had ended differently."
Desharnais, 36, spent parts of ten seasons in the National Hockey League with Montreal, Edmonton and the New York Rangers. In 524 career games, he put up 282 points (87 goals, 195 assists) and helped the Canadiens reach the Eastern Conference Final in 2014.
In 2018, Desharnais headed overseas, playing in the KHL before moving to Switzerland and spending four seasons with HC Fribourg-Gotteron. With the NHL not sending players to the 2022 Olympics, Desharnais was given the opportunity to wear the Maple Leaf for the first time in his career, helping Canada to a sixth place finish.
