Zagidulin, 24, played his first season in North America with the Stockton Heat of the AHL this winter. In 30 games, he posted a 3.07 goals against average (GAA) and a .898 save percentage (SV%). Those numbers don't look overly impressive, but it took the young Russian goaltender some time to adapt to the North American game. Prior to this season, he had spent three seasons with Metallurg Manitogorsk of the KHL. During the 2018-19 season, he posted an extremely impressive 1.96 GAA and a .924 SV% in 25 games.
This signing is interesting giving the uncertainty of current Flames backup goaltender Cam Talbot. Talbot recently mentioned that he still wants to be an NHL starting goalie and is willing to leave the Flames this offseason in an attempt to do so. If that were to happen, they would need a new goalie behind David Rittich. Though he may still need some more AHL seasoning, they may see Zagidulin filling that role sooner than later.
