Eye injury forces Boychuk to call it a career
Per the New York Islanders official team Twitter account, defenceman Johnny Boychuk's career has come to an end due to an eye injury he suffered during the 2019-20 season.
The injury was the second he had to the same eye. The 36-year-old Edmonton, Alberta native had spent the past six seasons with the Islanders. Prior to joining the Islanders he played in five seasons with the Boston Bruins, and also had played a brief four game stint to begin his NHL career with the Colorado Avalanche. He has two more years left on his seven-year deal that pays him $6 million per season, and will now be stashed on the long-term injured reserve list.
This is a very disappointing ending to a solid career. The 61st pick of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft amassed 54 goals and 206 points in 725 career regular season games, and also played an additional 104 playoff games where he had 30 points. He played a huge role for the 2011 Stanley Cup winning Bruins, which marked the one and only Cup win of his career.
