LeBrun went on to mention that this proves how the players feel regarding the NHL's salary deferral/escrow asks. It has been reported and confirmed that the NHL is asking the players to take a 13 per cent pay cut for the 2020-21 season, which would be on top of the 10 per cent cut they already agreed to take. Given how far apart these two sides appear to be, as well as all the challenges having a 2020-21 season will be given the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a rising concern on whether a season will happen at all.
LeBrun says he believes there is still time to salvage this, and believes next week will be extremely important. Still, given that it is nearly December, a start date of January 1 which the league was hoping to make happen seems extremely unlikely at this point. If a 2020-21 season does happen, it may very well be a 48-game schedule beginning in early February.
