NHL trailblazer passes away
One of the first Indigenous players to ever skate in the National Hockey League has sadly passed away. Fred Sasakamoose passed away at the age of 86 due to complications from COVID-19, according to his son Neil. Sasakamoose was admitted to hospital less than a week ago, but unfortunately succumbed to the terrible illness.
Fred Sasakamoose, one of the first Indigenous athletes to play in the NHL, passed away today at age 86 according to his son, Neil. He was hospitalized recently with a case of COVID-19.

Sasakamoose had a brief stint in the NHL, playing for the Chicago Blackhawks during the 1953-54 season. In 11 games, he had no points, and six penalty minutes. He spent the majority of his hockey career playing in lower leagues across Canada.
In 2007, he was inducted into the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame. In 2017, he was named to the Order of Canada, which is an award given to Canadians who have made outstanding achievements, are dedicated to the community, or have served the country.
Sasakamoose may not have had a long NHL, or even hockey career for that matter, but he paved a way for other Indigenous players to play the game they love.
